UK's BEST DESSERT
Gourmet Spot, Durham's self proclaimed finest and boldest restaurant serves Britain's best dessert, Restaurant Magazine decided at its U.K. Best Dishes Awards on 17th November 2007 in London.
Beating competition from London based Michelin Star chefs; Sean Wilkinson won the prestigious award for the North East with his rendition of Tea and Toast.
The dish consists of a Balloon of Earl Gray Tea inflated by nitrogen gas and frozen with liquid nitrogen, served with brown toast and marmalade puree, raspberry jelly and shortcake.
A new restaurant in the heart of Durham is giving diners a taste of science.
The Gourmet Spot on The Avenue serves food using liquid nitrogen giving an explosion of flavour to its customers.
Restaurant proprietor Roopal Naik says; “We offer an all round dining experience rather than simply a night out."
“There are lots of magical flavours to be explored so come with an open mind."
Roopal says that no other restaurant in the North East serves food in this way and has brought in experimental chef Sean Wilkinson to weave his magic in the kitchen.
Sean said; It is artistic and creative but with a hint of madness.
He added; “Food should have a wow factor and that is what the Gourmet Spot offers.
It is all about twisting and expanding flavours.”
The restaurant is keen to support local producers and they personally pick fresh cheese and meat at local markets. Organic food is used as much as possible.
Whilst the restaurant is offering something different for locals they promise that the means will be affordable and there will be something for everybody.
The long term aim for the restaurant is to earn a prestigious Michelin Star Award.
Diners will be given test tubes and syringes with different flavours in.
Sean claims that this method makes people start talking to one another; “It creates a huge chain of talk."
Offering a relaxed atmosphere, Gourmet Spot boasts breathtaking views across the city and links onto Farnley Tower Hotel.
